
Lehman In Top Five Entering Final Round of Big West Conference Finals

LIHUE, Kauai, Hawai'i -- Cal Poly senior Thomas Lehman is in the top five heading into Tuesday's final round of the 2019 Big West Conference Men's Golf Championship, but the Mustangs are last among the nine squads competing for the team title.
Lehman (pictured at right) carded rounds of 73 and 71 at the Wailua Golf Club on a wet Monday and is tied with Thomas Hutchison of UC Davis for fourth place at even par, two strokes behind Zach Smith of UC Santa Barbara.
Lehman in the opening round posted three birdies, two bogeys and a double-bogey for his one-over-par total, then recorded four birdies and three bogeys in the afternoon to finish at 144.
Smith carded a 68 and 74 for his two-under-par 142 total and is one shot ahead of Matt Wilson of Cal State Fullerton (75-68) and Matt Gunson of UC Irvine (74-69).
Cal Poly's Will Draper is tied for 18th place with a pair of 75s for a 150 total on the 6,991-yard, par-72 course.
Cade Casaga rebounded from an opening-round 84 with a 72 for a 156 total and 37th place while Tanner Podres had a 79 and 81 for 160 and 42nd place. Dominick Hoover rounded out the Mustang scoring with an 81 and 84 for a 165 total and 45th place.
Draper leads the field in par-3 scoring at one under par while Lehman tops the field in par-4 scoring at two under par. Casaga is tied for sixth in par-5 scoring at four under par. Lehman's seven birdies on the day is tied for sixth.
UC Santa Barbara's Brett Bennett carded a hole-in-one on the 168-yard 14th hole in the second round.
UC Irvine leads the team standings with a 586 total, three shots ahead of defending Big West champion Long Beach State. UC Davis is another two strokes back in third.
Final round tees off at 7:30 a.m. HST (10:30 a.m. PDT).
The Big West team champion automatically qualifies for one of six 54-hole regional tournaments, which will be conducted May 12-15. Thirteen teams and ten individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.
The six regional sites include Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Washington, hosted by Washington State University; Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, California, hosted by Stanford University; TPC Myrtle Beach in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, hosted by Coastal Carolina University and Myrtle Beach Regional Sports Alliance; University of Louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville, Kentucky, hosted by the University of Louisville; University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Georgia, hosted by the University of Georgia; and University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas, hosted by the University of Texas.
NCAA team and individual medalist titles will be decided May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
