
Cal Poly Men's Tennis Edged at No. 5 USC

LOS ANGELES — The Cal Poly men's tennis fell at No. 5 USC Saturday 4-0 in its first match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Los Angeles, ending its two-match winning streak.
The Mustangs (2-2) nearly took the doubles point from Trojans (2-0). After USC won the No. 1 doubles 6-4, senior Dominic Bechard and freshman Gary Vardanyan won their match at the No. 3 position 6-4 over the Trojans' Daniel Cukierman and Bradley Frye. Bechard and Vardanyan are now 2-0 this season in doubles. USC then won the doubles in a close match at the No. 2 spot, with the Trojans just beating junior Antoine Noel and redshirt freshman Daly Meinert 7-5.
Playing against some of the top-ranked singles players in the country, the Mustangs battled tough. USC took No. 1 singles followed by No. 4 singles to take a 3-0 lead. At the No. 2 spot, Bechard was matched up against No. 8 Cukierman. Cukierman won the first set 6-1 before Bechard pushed him in a close second set before ultimately falling 7-5 to finish off the 4-0 win.
In the three other matches that were called before they could be finished, sophomore Roman Shenkiryk was tied at a set apiece at the No. 6 spot after winning his second set 6-3. At the No. 3 spot, Vardanyan was leading in the second set 3-2 after just losing the first set 7-6. He remains undefeated in both singles and doubles for the season at 5-0. Meinert was tied 2-2 in the second set after just losing the first 7-6.
Cal Poly will play in the consolation match Sunday at 10 a.m. against South Alabama who lost to UC Santa Barbara earlier in the day Saturday.
