SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly men's tennis team swept Hawai'i on Sunday, April 8 for their sixth sweep of the season. The Mustangs defeated Hawai'i 4-0, boosting their record to 15-5 overall and 3-0 in Big West Conference play.
The Mustangs won two of three doubles matches to secure the doubles point and won three straight singles matches on court four, five and six to win the dual match.
In doubles, junior Josh Ortlip and senior Axel Damiens earned a 6-3 win at No. 1 to defeat Blaz Seric and Aleksa Lazarevic. Junior Dominic Bechard and senior Karl Enander took down Fabian Woehrl and Tristan Martins 6-3 at No. 3 to secure the doubles point. Freshmen Roman Shenkiryk and Andrew Whitehouse played at No. 2 against Lucas LaBrunie and Chia-Hua Lu but did not finish.
Three singles wins for Cal Poly came from courts four, five and six in straight sets. Damiens defeated Woehrl 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 and Stater took down Martins 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5.
Enander finished at No. 6 for a dominant win over Chia-Hua Lu 7-5, 6-2. Here is what Enander has to say about his performance today: "In both doubles and singles I did not start out so strong. I just kept doing what I'm good at and trusting my game." Enander has a notoriously strong serve, making him a problem for opponents.
The Mustangs are also undefeated at home, winning all nine dual matches. They have three matches left this season - all at home.
Cal Poly men's tennis returns to action next weekend against UC Davis on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. and Sunday against Santa Clara at 1:00 p.m. After that, the Mustangs have only one more match against UC Santa Barbra before the Big West Tournament.
