
Mustangs Men's Tennis Defeats UC Irvine in Conference Opener

IRVINE, Calif. — The Cal Poly men's tennis team opened conference play Saturday, March 31 with a dual match against UC Irvine, defeating the Anteaters 5-2.
Irvine started the match strong, winning the doubles point. Junior Josh Ortlip and senior Axel Damiens reclaimed their spot on court one and lost to Mason Hansen and Luca Marquard 6-4, making their doubles record 9-4.
Freshmen Roman Shenkiryk and Andrew Whitehouse dropped to court two, and defeated Vatsal Bajpai and Bruce Man-Son-Hing 6-2.
Senior Karl Enander and junior Dominic Bechard lost to Daiel Gealer and Luis Lopez 6-1.
The Mustangs heated up for singles after losing the doubles point.
On court two, Bechard finished first, defeating Sasha Krasnov 6-3, 6-0. His singles record is 11-1 this season.
Next, Enander took down Bajpai 6-2, 6-3 on court six.
Sophomore Antoine Noel defeated Luca Marquad on court three 6-4, 7-6.
Ortlip finished next on court one, defeating Luis Lopez 7-6, 6-4. His singles record is now 14-5 this season.
Freshman Alexander Stater secured the win for Cal Poly, defeating Mason Hansen 7-6, 7-5 (5-10).
Damiens lost to Daniel Gealer 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 on court four.
Conference play for the Mustangs includes five dual matches against UCI (5-2), UC Riverside, Hawai'i, Davis and UCSB.
Mustang men's tennis returns to action Sunday, April 1st against UCR for a 2 p.m. dual match in Riverside.
