SOMIS, Calif. — After shooting 29 over par in the opening round and 36 over par in the second round on a hot and windy Monday, the Cal Poly men's golf team settled down just like the wind did Tuesday.
Playing in cooler temperatures with calm winds and cloudy skies, the Mustangs posted a final-round nine-over-par 297 and moved up one spot into a ninth-place finish in the Waves Challenge hosted by Pepperdine at the Saticoy Country Club.
Opening its spring schedule, Cal Poly carded a 54-hole four-person 938 total on the 6,985-yard, par-72 course, just one stroke behind eighth-place Fresno State. There were 15 teams in the two-day tournament.
Pepperdine claimed the team title by 37 strokes, finishing with a 13-over-par 877 aggregate. UC Santa Barbara was a distant second, one shot ahead of third-place Boise State.
All five Mustang golfers climbed the leaderboard in the final round.
Nick Engelhardt moved up five spots into a tie for 25th place with a final-round 75 while Jimmy Castles inched up one position into a tie for 29th place after a round of 76.
Grady Smith jumped seven spots into a tie for 37th place with a 74, Mitch Martin climbed nine positions into a tie for 40th place with a 75 and Tanner Podres (pictured above), who carded an 89 and 80 Monday, leaped 13 spots into a tie for 48th place Tuesday with a 73.
