Cal Poly Climbs One More Spot to 12th in Warrior Princeville Makai Invite

PRINCEVILLE, Hawaii — Nathan Clark and Nick Engelhardt, Cal Poly's Nos. 4 and 5 golfers, ended up as the top two Mustang finishers in the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational, which wrapped up a three-day run Tuesday on the Makai Golf Club at Princeville course.
Clark (pictured at right) followed Monday's 68 with a 69 and finished in a tie for 46th place with his two-under-par 214 total on the 7,223-yard, par-72 layout, shattering his career best by 10 strokes. Clark was in 95th place with a 77 on Sunday, but climbed 49 positions over the final 36 holes of the 20-team tournament on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.
Engelhardt posted a final-round 73 for a 214 total, matching his career best for 54 holes, and 46th-place tie as well. He posted a 71 and 70 on the first two days of the tournament.
As a team, Coach Scott Cartwright's Mustangs, in 14th place after the first round Sunday and 13th place Monday, climbed one more notch into 12th place Tuesday, posting a four-person four-under-par 284 total Tuesday. The Mustangs, who surpassed Utah Valley, finished with an 11-under-par 853 aggregate.
Cal Poly posted a season-best 11-under-par 277 on Monday, the ninth-best total in program history, and the 853 total for 54 holes is tied for No. 8.
Louisville led from start to finish for the team title, carding a final-round 273 for a 56-under-par 808 total. San Diego State finished second, nine shots back, and Missouri claimed third place, another seven shots back.
Top individual honors went to Simon Zach of Louisville, who overtook second-round leader Hayden Buckley of Missouri. Zach carded a 66 Tuesday for a 21-under-par 195 total while Buckley, who posted a 61 Monday, finished with a 70 for a 197 total. Third place was shared by Steven Fisk of Georgia Southern and Matthias Schmid of Louisville with 198 totals.
Cal Poly's other scoring golfers besides Clark and Engelhardt were Jimmy Castles with a final-round 72 for an even-par 216 total and 58th-place tie, Grady Smith with a final-round 76 for a 219 aggregate and 76th-place tie, and Mitch Martin with a final-round 70 for a 223 total and 84th-place tie.
Competing as an individual, Thomas Lehman finished in a tie for 63rd place with his second round of 70 for a 217 total.
Clark carded five birdies and one double-bogey for his 69 while Engelhardt produced three birdies, two bogeys and one double-bogey. Martin had four birdies and two bogeys for his 70.
Clark finished tied for 14th in par-5 scoring at seven under par.
Cal Poly returns to the course Jan. 29-30 at the Pepperdine Wave, to be held at the Saticoy Country Club in Somis, Calif.
