SOUTH KENT, Conn. — Four more rounds under par enabled the Cal Poly men's golf team to claim a first-place finish in the Hartford Hawk Invitational, which ended a two-day run Tuesday at the Bull's Bridge Golf Club.
Justin De Los Santos (pictured at right), the 2015 Big West Conference individual champion, led the Mustangs in the final round with a three-under-par 69, finishing with a five-under-par 139 total and a tie for fifth place.
Cole Nygren, Jesse Yap and Jordan Wright all posted 71s Tuesday and finished in the top 20 as Cal Poly compiled a 282 total Tuesday for a 36-hole 18-under-par 558 aggregate.
Central Florida, which started the final round three shots behind the Mustangs, also carded a 282 for a 561 total and second place. Seton Hall finished third at 565. There were 19 teams in the field.
"First of all, it was an incredible golf course, but we played the last three holes at nine under par for the tournament and that's what got it done for us," said Mustang head coach Scott Cartwright. "It was a struggle most of the way and we were trailing for a time, but finished really well."
Nygren finished tied for seventh place with a 140 total while both Yap and Wright shared 12th place with three golfers, all at 141. Court Lewis, who carded a 67 Monday, recorded a 78 Tuesday for a 145 total and 26th place.
Monday's scheduled 36 holes was shortened to 18 holes due to rain.
Donnie Trosper of Central Florida was medalist with rounds of 65 and 69 for a 10-under-par 134 total, one stroke ahead of Towson's Dylan Stein (68-67). Jake McCrory (67-70) of Sam Houston State finished third at 137.
De Los Santos and McCrory shared the top spot in par-4 scoring with a minus-four total while wright was third in par-5 scoring at minus-six. Yap and Wright were sixth in par-3 scoring at minus-one.
Nygren, Wright and De Los Santos all carded an eagle in the tournament. Yap led the Mustangs with his 10 birdies and Nygren had the most pars (25) among the five Mustangs.
Cal Poly has won 17 tournaments since reinstating men's golf in 2000, including two first-place finishes last season.
The Mustangs return to action Oct. 3-4 at the Nick Watney Invitational hosted by Fresno State at the San Joaquin Country Club.
