RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The 73rd-ranked Cal Poly men's tennis team collected its second consecutive victory on Saturday morning after a 4-0 win over UC Riverside at the UCR Tennis Complex. Cal Poly junior Ben Donovan (pictured) clinched the match for the Mustangs behind a 6-2, 6-4 decision over UCR's Julian Ruffin from the first singles position.
Saturday's match with the Highlanders was postponed from Friday due to weather, as Cal Poly improved to 2-0 in Big West play this season. After Cal Poly swept the initial four singles matchups, the teams decided to end the match without playing the doubles portion.
Cal Poly sophomore Axel Damiens provided the Mustangs their first lead of the morning with a straight set, 6-2 and 6-1 win over Calvin Ngo from the fifth spot. Junior Garrett Auproux won his ninth match from the second spot this season with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over UCR's Sean Yun to provide the Mustangs with a 2-0 advantage.
Cal Poly junior Corey Pang won his ninth straight singles matchup, providing the Mustangs a 3-0 lead with a 7-6(3), 6-0 win over Kyle McCann from the third position. Pang hasn't dropped a singles matchup since Feb. 21, a string of nine straight matches.
Cal Poly (10-8 overall, 2-0 Big West) is scheduled to play UC Irvine at 11 a.m. Sunday in Costa Mesa.
