COSTA MESA, Calif. – For the second time in as many days, the 73rd-ranked Cal Poly men's tennis team remained unbeaten in conference play after a 4-1 win on Sunday over UC Irvine at the Mesa Verde Country Club. Cal Poly junior Corey Pang won his tenth singles matchup in a row and his win over UCI's Tyler Pham in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) clinched the match for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly improved to 11-8 overall and 3-0 in Big West action, while UC Irvine slipped to 14-7.
Cal Poly juniors Garrett Auproux and Tim Tan collected their third consecutive doubles win with a 7-5 victory over Pham and Jonathan Hammel from the second spot, which clinched the doubles point for the Mustangs.
The Cal Poly sophomore tandem of Dan Cardiff and Karl Enander ousted UCI's Luca Marquard and Caryl Hernandez from the third position, 6-4, to earn their third win in a row and eighth overall this season.
True freshman Sreyas Kolachalam defeated UCI's Hammel from the sixth solo position, 6-1 and 6-2 to provide the Mustangs with a 2-0 match advantage. Kolachalam (pictured) remained unbeaten in singles dual play this season and picked up his second victory at the collegiate level.
After UC Irvine drew closer at 2-1, Cal Poly sophomore Axel Damiens beat Vatsal Bajpai in two sets, 6-3 and 6-3 from the fifth position to set up Pang's match-clinching win.
Pang is 15-4 this dual season in singles action and hasn't lost since Feb. 21.
Cal Poly (11-8, 3-0) contests its third match in as many days when welcoming UNLV to Mustang Courts at 10 a.m. Monday. The match with the Rebels is a makeup from an originally-scheduled tilt that was rained out in March. Admission at Mustang Courts is free.
