
Cal Poly Defeats UC Riverside in Big West Tournament Opener

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – The eighth-seeded Cal Poly women's tennis team successfully opened the 2016 Big West Conference Tournament with a 4-0 victory over ninth-seeded UC Riverside on Wednesday morning at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Cal Poly advances to face top-seeded Long Beach State at 8 a.m. PDT Thursday in the quarterfinals.
Cal Poly (4-15 overall) began the day by grabbing the doubles point when junior Zoe Oedekerk and senior Danè Joubert beat UCR's Karla Dulay and Tamila Vaksman from the first position, 6-3. Cal Poly sophomores Molly Reed and Abigail Bacharach downed UCR's Abby Valera and Kassie Truong from the third position, 6-0 to provide the Mustangs with the early edge.
Joubert (pictured) gave Cal Poly a 2-0 lead with a straight set victory, 6-0 and 6-1 over UCR's Natalie Penner at No. 5. Reed collected her fifth consecutive singles win with a 6-0, 6-4 decision over Tamilla Vaksman from the sixth position for a 3-0 advantage.
Cal Poly's Abigail Bacharach clinched the match with a two-set triumph over Caroline Hall from the fourth position, 6-4 and 6-3.
Reed – who leads Cal Poly with nine dual match singles wins this season – moved to 7-2 from the sixth position this season. Joubert won her fifth singles matchup of the year, while Bachararch earned her third win from the No. 4 spot.
