INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – Despite a win by junior Zoe Oedekerk and senior Danè Joubert over the 34th-ranked doubles tandem in the nation, the eighth-seeded Cal Poly women's tennis team was eliminated from the 2016 Big West Conference Tournament by top-seeded Long Beach State, 5-0 during the quarterfinal round on Thursday morning at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
Long Beach State – the ITA's 62nd-seeded team nationally – won the doubles point early and the initial three singles matchups over the Mustangs to clinch a spot in Friday's semifinal round. Cal Poly ends its season at 4-16 overall after defeating No. 9 UC Riverside yesterday during the first round of the tournament.
Oedekerk (pictured) and Joubert upset LBSU's duo of Laura Eales and Hayley Thompson, 6-3 from the first position, providing Cal Poly with the early momentum. The 49ers would collect the final two doubles matchups, including Ebba Unden and Alex Jones over Abigail Bacharach and Molly Reed, 7-5 in the third position to take the 1-0 match advantage.
Oedekerk and Joubert finished the season with four victories from the No. 1 doubles position and won their final two matches paired together.
LBSU's Unden failed to drop a single point against Cal Poly senior Bryn Bacharach, 6-0 and 6-0 from the second position, providing the 49ers with a 2-0 lead. After Eales defeated Abigail Bacharach in the fourth position, 6-0 and 6-1, LBSU's Gerard clinched the match for the No. 1 seed with a 6-1, 6-3 ousting of Cal Poly freshman Ilana Oleynik from the third spot.
Cal Poly sophomore Molly Reed was leading her singles matchup with Georgie Sanders in the sixth spot, 1-0 after a first-set victory (6-2). Reed ends her second campaign with the Mustangs having won her last five solo matchups overall, while collecting a team-high nine singles victories.
