SAN LUIS OBIPSO, Calif. – Contesting its final home match of the regular season, the Cal Poly women's tennis team was defeated by San Jose State on Saturday morning at Mustang Courts, 6-1. Despite the loss, Cal Poly sophomore Molly Reed won her fourth consecutive singles matchup overall with a two-set victory over Justine Deleval, 6-1 and 6-1.
The doubles point came down to the third and final matchup, as Reed and sophomore Abigial Bacharach evened things up at one apiece with a 7-6 (7-5) win over Delelval and Gaelle Rey. The third doubles matchup was closely contested, as it came down to a tiebreak, which the Spartans would take after 7-6 (7-4) victory by Sybille Gauvain and Marie Klocker over the Cal Poly tandem of Zoe Oedekerk and Danè Joubert from the first position.
After San Jose State captured the doubles point, the Spartans took a 2-0 lead after Gauvain beat Oedekerk from the first position, 6-0 and 6-1. Reed's win at No. 6 over Deleval drew the Mustangs to within 2-1, but the Spartans grabbed the final four singles matchups to win.
Rey ousted Cal Poly freshman Ilana Oleynik from the third position, 6-4 and 6-1 to clinch the match for San Jose State.
Cal Poly (3-15 overall) now turns its focus to the Big West Conference Tournament at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden that begins next Wednesday. Cal Poly is scheduled to play UC Riverside in order to advance to the second round.
