
Cal Poly Snaps Losing Streak, Defeats UC Riverside on Saturday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Contesting its second home match in as many days, the Cal Poly women's tennis team snapped a seven-match losing skid with a 6-1 victory over UC Riverside on Saturday afternoon at Mustang Courts. Cal Poly took the doubles point early and never looked back against the Highlanders, producing five wins out of a possible six singles matchups.
Cal Poly junior Zoe Oedekerk and freshman Ilana Oleynik ousted UCR's tandem of Tracy Van and Natalie Penner in the first position, 6-1 and senior Bryn Bacharach and freshman Celine Gruaz outlasted Arabella Valera and Kassie Truong from the third position, 6-4 to clinch the doubles point for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly kept the momentum in singles, as sophomore Molly Reed won her fourth solo matchup in her last five with a straight set decision (6-2, 6-3) over Penner from the fifth position. Reed improved to 5-4 overall in dual matches this season.
Oedekerk swept UCR's Chloe Pham in two sets (6-0, 6-0), providing Cal Poly a 3-0 match advantage. Gruaz (pictured) cemented the match for the Mustangs with a comeback, three-set win over Tamila Vaksman in the sixth spot (1-6, 6-4, 7-6), for her first collegiate singles dual match victory.
Cal Poly's Oleynik put the finishing touches on the 6-1 victory with a three-set triumph over Karlay Dulay (6-3, 4-6, 6-4), to pick up her third dual match win of the season.
Cal Poly (3-11) continues Big West Conference play with a pair of road matches next weekend, including an 11 a.m. Saturday battle against Cal State Fullerton and 11 a.m. Sunday tilt at UC Irvine.
