IRVINE, Calif. – Despite wins from Abigail Bacharach and Molly Reed, the Cal Poly women's tennis team was beaten by UC Irvine, 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
Reed (pictured) defeated Cassidy Branstine in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) from the sixth position and Bacharach outlasted UCI's Mazy Watrous from the fourth spot in three sets (6-2, 3-6, 6-3).
After UC Irvine secured the doubles point and took a 2-0 advantage after one singles matchup, Reed came up with a victory to slice the Anteater lead in half.
"Molly was clutch for us today," said Cal Poly head coach Kathrin Winterhalter.
With UC Irvine leading 3-1, Abigail Bacharach collected her fourth singles victory of the dual season and pulled Cal Poly to within one.
"Abby had a strong start today, but her opponent battled," Winterhalter said. "Abby was able to close it out in the third and get us closer."
UC Irvine would win the final two singles matchups, including a 6-4, 7-5 decision from Taylor LeFridge over Ilana Oleynik in the third position to clinch the match.
Cal Poly senior Danè Joubert forced a third set from the fourth position before eventually falling to Andrea Duva (6-2, 2-6, 6-5).
Cal Poly slipped to 3-13 overall and 1-6 in conference action, while UC Irvine improved to 4-14.
Reed's victory was her second consecutive overall and the sophomore moved to 4-2 from the No. 6 singles spot this year.
Cal Poly prepares for UC Santa Barbara at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 16 as conference play resumes next week. Admission at Mustang Courts is free.
