SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The 75th-ranked Cal Poly men's tennis team overwhelmed visiting Sacramento State and won its third straight match on Thursday afternoon, 7-0 behind the strength of the doubles point and six singles victories at Mustang Courts. With the win, Cal Poly improves to 6-6 in dual matches this season, while the Hornets fall to 3-8.
In doubles, the Cal Poly junior tandem of Ben Donovan and Corey Pang collected their third consecutive triumph – improving to 7-2 from the first doubles position this season – a 6-3 decision over Mikus Losbergs and Kasparas Zemaitelis and the sophomore combination of Dan Cardiff and Karl Enander sealed the doubles point with a 6-3 from No. 3 over Sacramento State's Joaquin Marquez and Niranjan Ram.
Cardiff and Enander are 4-2 when paired together at No. 3 this season.
Thursday's match was originally scheduled for Saturday, but with inclement weather headed into the area this weekend, both the Mustangs and Hornets agreed to play two days earlier.
With the early advantage, Cal Poly continued to put pressure on the Hornets, delivering three straight singles victories to clinch the match early.
The reigning Big West Conference Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week, junior Garrett Auproux, won his third successive matchup overall from the No. 2 position with a pair of 6-1 scores to defeat the Hornets' Marquez. Cal Poly sophomore Axel Damiens then beat Uli Vollath in back-to-back sets, 6-4 and 6-2 from No. 5 for the 3-0 match lead.
Damiens has also won three straight matchups after today's victory and now has six singles wins from the fifth position in dual match play.
Cal Poly junior Corey Pang (pictured) clinched the match with a two-set triumph over Zemaitelis from the third spot, 6-1 and 6-3 for his third consecutive solo win this season. Pang is now 8-4 from the No. 3 singles spot in dual match play this year.
Cal Poly junior Ben won his team-leading fourth match from the first singles position with a straight-set, 6-4 and 6-1 win over Losbergs. Mustang true freshman Josh Ortlip won his sixth matchup of the dual match season with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Sacramento State's Dom Miller from the fourth position.
Cal Poly (6-6) welcomes San Francisco to Mustang Courts for an 11 a.m. match Friday (originally scheduled for noon, but moved up due to weather). Admission is always free.
