NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Despite a singles victory from senior Dane Joubert, the Cal Poly women's tennis team was unable to solve CSUN on Sunday, falling 6-1. Cal Poly slips to 2-8 overall and has dropped its past four matchups this season.
Joubert's victory – the lone tally for the Mustangs against the Matadors – came from the fourth solo position over CSUN's Kristen Poei, 7-6, 1-6 and 10-2. For Joubert, it was the first time the senior has attacked from the No. 4 spot this year, improving to 4-2 in dual matches this season.
CSUN took control of the match early, after collecting the doubles point behind two wins from the first and second positions. Joubert and true freshman Ilana Oleynik fell to Mickey Hsu and Poei at No. 1, 6-4, while senior Bryn Bacharach and freshman Celina Gruaz were defeated by Vivian Lin and Skyla Alcon at No. 2, 6-1.
After CSUN took a 3-0 lead, Ki Kim clinched the match for the Matadors with a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Cal Poly sophomore Molly Reed at No. 5.
Cal Poly's Bryn Bacharach forced a third set from the second singles position against Lin – after taking the first set – only to fall in three, 6-4, 6-7 and 10-5.
Oleynik played from the No. 1 singles spot for the third time in her collegiate career and was competitive before falling to Hsu, 6-3 and 6-3.
Cal Poly (2-8) visits San Diego State for a dual match at 2 p.m. Tuesday before traveling to face LMU at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
