
Cal Poly Unable to Solve Hawai'i Pacific on Road

HONOLULU, HI – For the second consecutive day, Cal Poly women's tennis was unable to solve the riddle that accompanies its road opponent – this time, Hawai'i Pacific – falling to the Sharks, 4-0 at the UH Tennis Complex. HPU was ranked No. 9 by the ITA in Division II women's tennis to close the 2015 season.
HPU grabbed the doubles point behind wins from Syna Kayser and Lorena Gheorghe, who defeated senior Bryn Bacharach and freshman Ilana Olyenik at No. 2, 6-4, while Ocean Adam and Ali Karamanoleva, who beat sophomore Abigail Bacharach and sophomore Molly Reed at No. 3, 6-2.
Individually, the Sharks overwhelmed the Mustangs on Sunday afternoon and grabbed the first three singles battles to deliver its sweep victory.
Kayser outdueled Cal Poly sophomore Zoe Oedekerk at No. 3, 6-2, 6-2, while HPU's Adam took care of Bryn Bacharach at No. 4 in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0 for the 3-0 match advantage.
A victory by Karamanelova over Abigail Bacharach at No. 6, 6-3, 6-2 cemented the match triumph for the Sharks.
Cal Poly sophomore Zoe Oedekerk (at No. 3 singles), junior Emily Gibbens (No. 1) and Oleynik (No. 2) had their matches halted after Karamanelova ousted Bacharach for the final tally.
Cal Poly (1-2 in dual match play this season) visits Fresno State at 10 a.m. PT Saturday, Feb. 13 as the spring season continues for the Mustangs.
