FRESNO, Calif. – Competing in its third road match in a week, the Cal Poly women's tennis team was swept by the 28th-ranked Fresno State Bulldogs, 7-0 on Saturday morning at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
A pair of Mustangs – sophomore Abigail Bacharach and freshman Ilana Oleynik – nearly forced a third set before falling to the Bulldogs. Bacharach was outlasted in two sets, 7-5, 6-4 by FSU's Olivia Noble at No. 6 singles, while Oleynik was defeated, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3 by Rana Sherif Ahmed.
To begin the day, Fresno State secured the doubles point behind two victories, but not before Cal Poly knotted the score at one apiece to force a decisive third. Cal Poly sophomore Molly Reed and Abigail Bacharach (pictured) beat Fresno State's pairing of Sofya Malysheva and Emma Wilson at No. 3, 6-4 to send the doubles point into a tiebreak. The Bulldogs then captured the point after Anneka and Sophie Watts ousted Bryn Bacharach and Oleynik at No. 2, 6-4.
Mayar Sherif Ahmed – ranked No. 26 in singles by the ITA – used a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles over Emily Gibbens to improve to 14-6 as a solo attacker this season.
Cal Poly's Oedekerk was beaten in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0 from the second position by FSU's Sophie Watts and Mustang senior Bryn Bacharach fell to Galina Bykova at No. 4, 6-4, 6-1.
Fresno State improves to 4-3 in spring dual matches this season, while Cal Poly is now 1-3.
Cal Poly now returns home for the first of three consecutive dual matches, including a 10 a.m. PT Monday, Feb. 15 tilt against UC Davis at Mustang Courts. Monday's battle with the Aggies marks the second Big West Conference match of the season for Cal Poly.
