HONOLULU, Hawaii – Fresh off its first dual match victory of the spring season, Cal Poly women's tennis was defeated by No. 67 Hawai'i, 4-0 at the UH Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon. After a lengthy rain delay, the 'Bows proved to be too much for the Mustangs in the first Big West Conference matchup of the season for either side.
The Cal Poly duo of sophomore Zoe Oedekerk and senior Dane Joubert (pictured) ousted the UH pair of Sarah Gealer and Klara Pribylova, 6-2 in the first position for the initial advantage of the match. From there, though, Hawai'i took control and failed to drop a single matchup – in both doubles and singles – the rest of the way.
Cal Poly senior Bryn Bacharach and freshman Ilana Olyenik forced a tiebreak in their matchup with Cindy Nguyen and Roxanne Resma before falling at No. 2, 7-6 (9-7). With the doubles point hanging in the balance, the UH pairing of Marina Hruba and Paulina Petriskova downed Cal Poly's sophomore duo of Abigail Bacharach and Molly Reed at No. 3, 6-2, to capture the 1-0 match advantage.
Individually, Cal Poly had no answer for the 'Bows as Hawai'i delivered three singles victories to cement the 4-0 triumph.
Resma outdueled Reed from the fifth position in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, while Nguyen handed Mustang junior Emily Gibbens a two-set defeat at No. 1, 6-1, 6-0. From the sixth spot, Petriskova downed Cal Poly's Abigail Bacharach, 6-3, 6-1, for the match-clinching victory.
For Cal Poly, Oleynik, Bryn Bacharach and Oedekerk all had their singles matchups halted after Petriskova cemented UH's victory on Saturday.
Cal Poly (1-1 overall, 0-1 Big West) continues its three-match road trip at noon PT Sunday against Hawai'i Pacific. The neutral match will be played from the UH Tennis Complex.
