SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Contesting its second road match in as many days, the Cal Poly women's tennis team battled Sunday afternoon against Nevada before falling, 5-2 at the Degheri Tennis Center. A pair of Mustangs – Dane Joubert and Molly Reed – captured singles victories, while Cal Poly had a chance to win the doubles point and was unable to hold the lead.
With the doubles point even at one and Cal Poly's Joubert and Oedekerk serving to UN's Claudia Herrero and Adriana Gergelyova at No. 1 for match point, the Wolfpack duo broke Cal Poly (on deuce) to collect the doubles point for Nevada and won, 7-6.
"It came down to the tiebreaker in doubles," said Cal Poly head coach Kathrin Winterhalter. "We needed to hold our service game on deuce point and Nevada came away with the win."
The Cal Poly duo of Abigail Bacharach and Reed forced the tiebreaker in doubles after they ousted UN's Sara Korzeniecki and Monika Magusiak at No. 3, 6-4. Bacharach and Reed now lead the Mustangs with three doubles wins during dual match play this spring.
Individually, Reed won her second matchup in a row with a straight set victory over Korzeniecki at No. 6, 6-2 and 6-4. Reed remained unbeaten from the sixth singles spot this season, improving to 2-0.
Joubert (pictured) improved to 3-2 from the fifth singles spot this season with her triumph over Magusiak in three sets, 7-6, 2-6, 10-8. Joubert is now tied for the team lead with Reed for dual match wins this season (3).
Nevada's Sheila Morales defeated Oedekerk from the No. 2 spot in two sets, 6-3 and 6-1, while Gergelyova ousted Bryn Bacharach in back-to-back sets at No. 3, 6-2 and 6-1 for the 3-0 match advantage.
UN's Herrero beat Oleynik at No. 1, 6-1 and 6-4, to clinch the match for the Wolfpack.
"Molly and Dane played very tough today," Winterhalter said. "Dane outlasted her opponent and Ilana just couldn't fight off Herrero in the second set."
Cal Poly's Abigail Bacharach fought against UN's Blaga Delic from the No. 4 position – losing two games on deuce points – before falling 6-0 and 6-3.
Cal Poly (2-7) heads back on the road for a pair of matches this weekend when visiting both Saint Mary's at 11 a.m. Saturday and San Jose State at 12 p.m. Sunday. The Mustangs do not play again at home until Friday, April 1 against Long Beach State.
