SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's tennis team could not withstand five solo victories by Santa Clara on Saturday afternoon and fell to the Broncos, 6-1 at the Degheri Tennis Center. Despite Cal Poly sophomore Molly Reed (pictured) defeating SCU's Giannina Ong at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-3, it was the only point the Mustangs would collect in the loss.
With the loss, Cal Poly drops to 2-6 in spring dual matches this season, while Santa Clara improves to 4-4.
The Broncos captured the doubles point early, after victories by Madison Clarke and Chelby Cooke at No. 2 over the Cal Poly tandem of Bryn Bacharach and Ilana Oleynik, 6-2 and Delphine Rouvillois and Zeina El Tawil over Abigail Bacharach and Reed at No. 3, 6-3.
The Cal Poly pairing of Dane Joubert and Zoe Oedekerk were leading Nabila Farah and Daniella Sliva, 4-3, when the doubles point was secured by the Broncos.
In singles, Santa Clara used victories from Farah over Abigail Bacharach at No. 4, 6-0, 6-0 and Silva over Bryn Bacharach from No. 3, 6-1 and 6-1 to take a 3-0 match advantage. Reed then defeated Ong at No. 6 for Cal Poly's only point of the match, trimming the SCU lead to 3-1.
Clarke, however, would then oust Oedekerk in straight sets at No. 2, 6-1, 6-3 and El Tawil beat Joubert in two sets at No. 5, 6-1 and 6-2 to capture the match-clinching points for the Broncos.
Cal Poly freshman Oleynik battled from the No. 1 position – her first action from the first position this season – and nearly took a lead against Cooke before falling, 7-5, 6-2.
Cal Poly (2-6) returns to action in Santa Clara on Sunday against Nevada for a neutral site matchup. Sunday's match is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Degheri Tennis Center.
