SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Behind the strength of five singles victories, the Cal Poly men's tennis team overwhelmed visiting Fresno State on Saturday afternoon, 7-0 at Mustang Courts. With the victory, Cal Poly improved to 4-6 during dual match play, while the Bulldogs slipped to 3-5 this season.
The Cal Poly junior duo of Ben Donovan and Corey Pang beat FSU's tandem of Jakob Keppelmann and Euan McIntosh from the first doubles position, 6-2 and after the Bulldogs were unable to field a complete lineup, the Mustangs grabbed the doubles point for the early match advantage.
Individually, Cal Poly won five of the six singles matchups overall, with one battle being forfeited to the Mustangs due to FSU's inability to field a complete lineup.
Cal Poly sophomore Garrett Auproux (pictured) beat Mantas Bugailiskis at No. 2 in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 and Pang delivered a two-set win over Jeremy Moser, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 for a 3-0 match lead.
Cal Poly freshman Josh Ortlip won his fifth solo matchup of the dual season with a 6-4, 7-6(5) victory over Patrik Pech at No. 4 for the match-clinching point.
Mustang sophomore Axel Damiens outdueled Keppelmann from the fifth singles spot in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, and 6-3, while Donovan – after falling in the first set – used a comeback to oust McIntosh from the first position, 4-6, 6-3 and 6-2.
Cal Poly (4-6) continues its season-long, nine-match home stand at 12:00 p.m. Sunday when hosting No. 68 Pacific at Mustang Courts.
