
Cal Poly Claims Fifth Place in Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate

PALM DESERT, Calif. — Sophomore Jesse Yap carded a final-round 70 to lead the men's team of Cal Poly's Swanson Golf Program to a fifth-place finish among 20 schools competing in the final round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Sunday at The Classic Club.
Yap (pictured at right) posted a 54-hole even-par 216 total on the 7,322-yard, par-72 course for a ninth-place tie. He posted a 72 Friday and 74 Saturday.
Fellow Mustang golfer Justin De Los Santos, the reigning Big West Conference individual champion, added a 71 for a 219 total and a tie for 14th place. He had earlier rounds of 73 and 75.
Cal Poly posted a four-person 285 total Sunday, the best team score of the day, and finished just four strokes behind fourth-place TCU.
Kansas claimed the team title with a two-over-par 866 total, followed by Colorado at 869 and Texas Tech at 870.
Top individual honors were claimed by Sean Walsh of Gonzaga with rounds of 68, 71 and 70 for a seven-under-par 209 total. Chelso Barrett of TCU was two shots behind Walsh and Charlie Hillier of Kansas and Philip Juel-Berg of Colorado shared third place with 212 totals.
In addition to Yap and De Los Santos, Cal Poly's other scoring golfers were Jordan Wright with a final-round 73 for a 222 total and 26th place, Cole Nygren with a 74 for a 224 total and 39th place, and Jimmy Castles with a 71 for a 225 total and 45th place.
Competing as an individual, Nathan Clark carded a 72 Sunday for a 226 total and 59th place.
Cal Poly was third on the par-3 holes at 3.07, sixth on the par-4 holes at 4.26 and No. 1 on the par-5 holes with a 4.72 average (17 under par). The Mustangs were third with 178 pars and fifth with 38 birdies.
Individually, Nygren was tied for fifth on the par-3 holes at minus-1 while Yap was tied for 10th on the par-4 holes at two-over-par. Clark was tied for 11th on the par-5 holes at four-under-par. Wright's 39 pars was tied for seventh place, De Los Santos was tied for 10th with 10 birdies and Castles carded the lone Mustang eagle of the tournament.
Cal Poly returns to action next Monday and Tuesday at the Del Walker Classic on the Virginia Country Club course in Long Beach.
