
Cal Poly Defeats Cal State Dominguez Hills 75-64 in Home Opener

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Five Cal Poly players, led by Josh Martin's 16 points, scored in double figures as the Mustangs rallied from a 16-point first-half deficit to beat Cal State Dominguez Hills 75-64 in a non-conference men's basketball game Thursday night in the Mott Athletics Center.
Donovan Fields (above) added 15 points, Victor Joseph 13 and Luke Meikle and Kyle Toth 12 each for Cal Poly (1-2), playing its home opener.
The Division II Toros (1-2) were led by Vincent Golson's 20 points. Justin Sadler added 12.
Cal State Dominguez Hills utilized a 13-1 run to build a 34-18 lead with 6:11 to go in the first half. Dharion Tanner, Khaliq Ghani and Golson all hit three-pointers in a 75-second span to cap the rally and force Cal Poly's second timeout of the half.
Coach Joe Callero's Mustangs came out of the timeout with a 14-1 run to close the gap to 35-32 at the break. Meikle scored two baskets and a three-pointer during the late first-half run.
Cal State Dominguez Hills rebuilt its lead to nine points at 50-41 in the opening six minutes of the second half before the Mustangs turned the game around, this time for good.A 9-0 run tied the game at 50-50, Zach Gordon hitting a layup with 10:03 to go to catch the Toros.
Joseph's three-pointer with 8:47 to play gave Cal Poly the lead for good at 53-52 and the Mustangs raced to a 69-59 cushion with 1:33 to play with a 16-7 run. Martin tallied six of the Mustangs' points in the game-deciding spurt.
Cal Poly made 46 percent of its floor shots in each half for a 46.3 percent reading and turned the ball over just seven times.
The Toros outrebounded Cal Poly 37-30, led by Golson with seven. Martin grabbed six caroms to go along with a career-high six assists for the Mustangs.
Martin (pictured above) has scored in double figures in each of Cal Poly's three games. Joseph's 13 points off the bench are a Mustang career high.
Cal Poly, which has won four of its last five home openers, will host Bethesda on Saturday at 2 p.m. inside the Mott Athletics Center.
