
Cal Poly Sweeps Away Westmont, 7-0

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's tennis program opened its spring season with a sweep of Westmont on Saturday, 7-0, behind six singles victories at Mustangs Courts. Saturday's match was postponed for three hours due to rain in the area and Sunday's match with UC Santa Cruz was cancelled. No makeup date has been announced for the Cal Poly/UCSC match.
"It was great to get a match under our belt before starting conference play," first-year head coach Katharina Winterhalter said. "We came out today with a lot of energy and executed pretty well."
Cal Poly opened by grabbing the doubles point behind wins from senior Bryn Bacharach and freshman Ilana Oleynik over Westmont's Isabel Lee and Haley Strandness at No. 2, 6-2 and sophomore Molly Reed and sophomore Abigail Bacharach's sweep of Fernanda Rivera and Zarina Huber at No. 3, 6-0.
Oleynik (pictured) won her first collegiate spring dual match with a straight-set, 6-1, 6-1 win over Lee at No. 2 singles, while junior Emily Gibbens overwhelmed Ines Costamagna, 6-2, 6-1 in the first singles position.
Cal Poly's Bryn Bacharach defeated Strandness in two sets, 6-3, 6-2 from the third singles spot and Reed used a straight-set victory over Hubert at No. 4, 7-5, 6-0 to give the Mustangs a 5-0 lead on Westmont.
Cal Poly's Abigail Bacharach ousted Chloe Clement in two sets at No. 6, 6-0, 6-1 and senior Dane Joubert beat Rivera at No. 5, 6-0, 6-2 to seal Cal Poly's sweep triumph over Westmont.
Cal Poly travels to Hawai'i to begin Big West play at 1 p.m. PT Saturday, Feb. 6 and visits Hawai'i Pacific for a noon battle on Sunday, Feb. 7.
