Stone Tops Ranked Foe, but Cal Poly Falls to No. 44 Saint Mary's

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Senior Hannah Stone outlasted the nation's 123rd-ranked singles player, but the victory counted as the Cal Poly women's tennis team's lone decision on Wednesday afternoon as the Mustangs fell to No. 44 Saint Mary's, 6-1.
Opening Wednesday's match in doubles action on Mustang Courts, Stone paired with freshman Zoe Oedekerk at the No. 2 spot, but dropped a 6-3 decision to Jamie Pawid and Mary-Anne Jessup. Saint Mary's then claimed the doubles point at No. 1 with Jana McCord and Parminder Kaur downing Mustang junior Danè Joubert and sophomore Emily Gibbens, 6-2. With the doubles point finalized, the match at No. 3 between Mustang sophomore Sayaka Tsugai and freshman Molly Reed and Kareena Manji and Danielle Flores was left unfinished with Saint Mary's leading, 5-3.
Stone, however, returned in singles play at the No. 3 position to hand 123rd-ranked Catherine Leduc a 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 defeat. At No. 2, Oxnevad also recovered from an opening-set loss against McCord before dropping a 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 decision.
In singles matches involving other ranked opponents, Gibbens – at No. 1 – dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to the 32nd-ranked Flores. At No. 5, Joubert was turned away by the 94th-ranked Manji , 6-1, 6-1.
During the remaining singles matches, Reed was doubled up at No. 4 by Pawid (6-3, 6-3) while, at the sixth spot, Mustang junior Bryn Bacharach was on the downside of a 6-2, 7-6 match versus Kaur.
"We fought really hard today against a solid team," fourth-year Mustang head coach Damon Coupe said. "Congratulations go to Hannah for beating a ranked player. We're on the right track as a team with those kinds of efforts."
Cal Poly (1-3) completes action this week with a 2 p.m. match at Santa Clara on Sunday, Feb. 8.
