SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – After falling behind early, the Cal Poly men's tennis team rallied from two deficits and defeated San Francisco 4-3 at Mustang Courts on Sunday afternoon for their second consecutive victory. The Mustangs continued their unbeaten season at home, moving to 4-0.
Cal Poly freshman Axel Damiens completed a comeback against USF's Johan Samuelsson, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 6, providing the final piece to the come-from-behind victory.
"I couldn't be happier for Axel with his clinching victory," assistant coach Mike Marquez said. "His family flew in from Paris yesterday to watch him play."
Damiens improved to 4-5 in singles this season with his second consecutive win, and remained undefeated in the sixth position.
"Axel's energy and electricity on the court to pull out the win in a 3-3 scenario was a special moment for all in attendance," Marquez commented.
The Dons opened the scoring with the doubles victory, as the No. 33-ranked ITA doubles team of Bernardo Saraiva and Nils Skajaa ousted Cal Poly's tandem of Garrett Auproux and Karl Enander 6-1.
"We didn't get the start that we wanted in doubles with some loose volleys," Marquez said.
The Mustangs conceded the second point to the Dons after Vacso Valverde defeated freshman Lucas Lesoeur in straight sets at No. 4, 6-2, 6-3. Cal Poly would then collect singles victories from senior Naveen Beasley over Christian Brockstedt, 6-1, 6-4 and Auproux over Skajaa, 6-2, 7-6 to tie the match at two apiece.
Beasley improved to 8-8 in singles this season – and 5-2 at No. 5 – collecting his second consecutive victory, while Auproux evened his season singles résumé at 8-8 and won his second straight.
After USF took a 3-2 lead, Cal Poly sophomore Corey Pang beat Thomas Takemoto 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3, snatching his second straight singles victory, moving to 3-2 while playing at No. 3.
Marquez credited Pang's rally to his powerful service game and precision volleys.
Knotted at three apiece, Cal Poly finished off the comeback with Damiens' victory at No. 6 and improved to 5-3 this season. The Mustangs won both matches this weekend, after dispatching No. 58 New Mexico 4-3 on Friday.
"Trailing twice, our team stayed focused and fought really hard to put together a great come-from-behind victory," head coach Nick Carless said.
Cal Poly continues its season Friday, Feb. 27 through Sunday, March 1 at the Pacific Tiger Invitational in Stockton.
"As a team it's back to high-intensity practices next week and getting each guy a little bit better," Carless added.
