
Cal Poly Settles for Fifth Place in Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational

PRINCEVILLE, Hawai'i — Senior Jordan Wright fired a final-round 68 and sophomore Nick Engelhardt added a 70 as the Cal Poly men's golf team wrapped up fifth place in the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational on Wednesday at the Makai Golf Club at Princeville.
Playing on the island of Kauai, Wright (pictured at right) posted five birdies and one bogey on the 7,223-yard par-72 course en route to his fourth round of 68 as a Mustang. He carded a career-best 64 at Colorado State in 2013.
Wright finished in a tie for 18th place with a 54-hole four-under-par 212 total.
With five birdies and three bogeys, Engelhardt finished in a tie for 28th place following his 70, earning an even-par 216 total.
Sophomore Jesse Yap was Cal Poly's top finisher, placing 14th with rounds of 70, 67 and 74 for a 211 total.
Other scoring Cal Poly golfers were junior Justin De Los Santos with a final-round 75 for a 214 total and 22nd place, and senior Cam Price with a 77 for a 222 total and 57th place.
Coach Scott Cartwright's Mustangs accumulated a four-person, three-round, 12-under-par 852 total, the sixth-best total in program history, after a final-round 287.
Alabama captured the team title with a 40-under-par 824 total, followed by Wake Forest at 829, Alabama-Birmingham at 836 and Pepperdine at 844. There were 17 teams in the three-day tournament.
Cameron Young of Wake Forest claimed the individual title, overcoming second-round leader Roy Cootes of Pepperdine with a final-round 67 for a 15-under-par 201 total. Tom Lovelady of Alabama had a 68 for a 203 total followed by Tim Harry of Alabama-Birmingham with a 69 for a 204 aggregate.
Cootes slipped to a 78 after earlier rounds of 69 and 64, finishing 14th at 211.
Competing as individuals, Cole Nygren shot a 74 for a 220 total and 47th place while Jimmy Castles added a 75 for a 222 aggregate and 57th place.
Cal Poly was fourth in the field with 61 birdies. Individually, De Los Santos was fourth with his 16 birdies for the tournament and Wright was ninth with his 36 pars.
Yap and Castles both finished even par on the par-3 holes, tied for sixth place, while Engelhardt was minus-four on the par-4 holes, tied for ninth place. Yap was minus-six on the par-5 holes, tied for eighth place.
Cal Poly concluded its fall schedule Wednesday and will open the spring portion of the 2015-16 slate Jan. 25-26 at the Winter Intercollegiate hosted by UC Riverside at the Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont.
