
Castles, Yap Finish in the 60s as Cal Poly Ties UC Santa Barbara for 10th Place

FRESNO, Calif. — Cal Poly sophomores Jimmy Castles and Jesse Yap carded scores in the 60s and helped the Mustang men's golf team to a one-under-par 283 total in the final round of the Nick Watney Invitational, which ended a two-day, 54-hole run Tuesday at the Fort Washington Country Club.
Castles (pictured at right) posted a career-best 67 on the 6,741-yard, par-71 course and Yap added a 69, his first round in the 60s as a Mustang, as Coach Scott Cartwright's squad finished in a tie for 10th place with UC Santa Barbara in the 13-team field.
Yap and Castles both finished in a tie for 28th place with even-par 213 totals.
Senior Jordan Wright was Cal Poly's top finisher, adding a 73 to the 71 and 68 he posted Monday and finishing in a tie for 24th place with a 212 total.
Other scoring Cal Poly golfers were Justin De Los Santos with a final-round 74 and a 217 total for 44th place and Cole Nygren with a 74 for a 223 total and 64th place.
Competing as an individual, Court Lewis carded a final-round 72 for a 220 total and 58th place.
Saint Mary's posted the best round of the day, a 12-under-par 272, to finish with a 27-under-par 825 total and the team title, eight strokes better than runner-up and tournament host Fresno State. California was third at 835.
Capturing top individual honors was Pavan Sagoo of Saint Mary's with a final-round 65 and a 16-under-par 197 total. Alex Chiarella of San Diego was runner-up, four shots behind Sagoo, and Patrick Fishburn of BYU was another shot back in third place.
Castles carded seven birdies and three bogeys for his 67 while Yap had an eagle, his second of the tournament, along with two birdies and a pair of bogeys on his way to a 69.
Also recording an eagle Tuesday was De Los Santos on his final hole of the day, the 505-yard, par-5 ninth hole.
Yap's two eagles were behind only Chiarella as he posted four eagles in the tournament. Castles posted 14 birdies over 54 holes, fourth-best in the field.
Yap was two-under-par on the par-3 holes while Wright was three-under-par on the par-4 holes. De Los Santos was the best Mustang golfer on the par-5s, going six-under-par.
Cal Poly returns to action Oct. 19-20 at the Bill Cullum Invitational hosted by CSUN at the Wood Ranch Golf Course in Simi Valley.
