
Martin Shoots 68 as Cal Poly Finishes Tied for Third in Nick Watney Invite

FRESNO, Calif. — A round of 68 by sophomore Mitch Martin on Tuesday helped the Cal Poly men's golf team climb into a tie for third place at the inaugural Nick Watney Invitational hosted by Fresno State at the Sunnyside Country Club.
Martin (pictured at right), who tied his career best with the four-under-par round on the 6,950-yard, par-72 course, finished all alone in second place, one stroke behind individual winner Byron Meth of Pacific, who shot a 71.
Meth posted a 10-under-par 54-hole 206 total while Martin, who carded a 70 and 69 Monday, finished at 207. Steven Molumby of Cal State Northridge and Carlos Briones of Santa Clara finished tied for third at 209.
Two other Mustangs also finished in the top 20.
Freshman Jimmy Castles posted a 70 for an even-par 216 total and 17th place while junior Cam Price checked in with a 74 and finished 19th with a 217 aggregate.
Also scoring for Cal Poly were sophomore Justin De Los Santos with a final-round 73 for a 225 total and 49th place, and freshman Jesse Yap with a 79 and 226 total for 52nd place.
Cal Poly's four-under-par four-person 860 total is seventh-best in the Mustangs' record book since the men's golf program was reinstated in 2000.
Pacific led all the way for the team title, carding a 26-under-par 838 total. Fresno State was secnd at 858 while Cal Poly joined UC Irvine and Santa Clara in the tie for third at 860.
Coach Scott Cartwright's Mustangs return to action Oct. 20-21 at the Bill Cullum Invitational hosted by Cal State Northridge at the Wood Ranch Golf Course in Simi Valley.
