DAVIS, Calif. — Cal Poly junior Devin Bennett is in second place heading into the second half of the men's decathlon at the Big West Conference Championships, and all three other Mustangs also at Toomey Field & Woody Wilson Track on Friday joined him in establishing career bests.
Bennett accumulated 3,493 points on Day 1, 91 back of the leader, Long Beach State senior Garrett Demirjian.
Bennett closed the evening by running the fastest 400 meters throughout the 11-competitor field, in a personal-best 50.47 seconds.
Earlier in the day, he had also set a PR in the shot put, with a mark of 39 feet, 10.75 inches.
Also for Cal Poly, freshman Ted Scranton is in fourth place, with a score of 3,323, just ahead of sophomore teammate Nick Ahrold (in fifth at 3,270).
Scranton (pictured at left) also ran the fastest 400 of his young career, clocking a 51.66.
Ahrold (far right) achieved the same individual feat, finishing at 51.58.
Arguably Ahrold's most impressive showing, though, came in the shot, where his 36-3 bettered his PR by more than two feet.
In the heptathlon, Mustang freshman Jessica Davis is in eighth place among 15 women, at 2,637 points. She cleared a season-best 5-0.25 in the high jump.
UC Riverside junior Danielle Littleton is in front, at 3,028.
The decathlon will resume at 11 a.m. Saturday (with the 110 hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1,500), followed by the start of the heptathlon (long jump, javelin, 800) at 1 p.m.
