LA JOLLA and STANFORD, Calif. — A day after two school records were rewritten in the Bay Area, the Cal Poly track and field team added to its early-season success in southern California, as the Mustangs won five events at the Cal-Nevada Championships on Saturday.
Whether at a dual meet (one so far) or invitational (three after this weekend), sophomore Kendal Nielsen has won the women's triple jump at every opportunity this spring (4 for 4).
This time in UC San Diego's Triton Stadium, she put forth a mark of 39 feet, 10.5 inches on her first attempt. It held up ahead of the best efforts from 25 others.
David Williams (pictured at right) won the 110-meter hurdles for the second meet in a row, with the latest coming at 14.20 seconds for the senior.
The earlier-established personal bests of both already rank in the top 10 in school history (40-8 for Nielsen, which is No. 5; and 14.17 for Williams, No. 2).
Shereese Cutler also scored in the triple jump, in sixth place with a PR of 38-6 on her second try.
In the women's high jump, sophomore Danielle Bryan cleared 5-8 on her first attempt to win. The next two in the field of 27 took two and three tries to get over the same height.
The other individual win came from redshirt freshman Ricky Strehlow in the men's triple jump, at 48-8 on his third attempt.
Cal Poly also picked up a win in the men's 400 relay. The nucleus of Walter Finney, Jamison Jordan, Isaiah Gibson and Joey Sanfilippo bettered their season-best time to 41.24. (They were one-tenth in front of the squad from Long Beach State, which as an overall team began the week No. 15 in Track & Field News' national dual meet rankings.)
Another of the most impressive performances of the day came in a second-place finish, as freshman Patrick Hughes cleared 16-4.75 in the pole vault. Hughes obliterated his season-best mark from a week ago (15-1) and was relegated to No. 2 only because it took him a second try to avoid jarring the crossbar loose, while the winner did so on his first.
A.J. Inouye was fifth, with a PR of 15-5, and Chris Bet was ultimately seventh with the same mark.
Back on the track, Jordan was third in the 100, in 10.73, and Finney took fifth in the 200, at 21.83.
Daijah Joe-Smith was also fifth in the women's 200, in 24.74.
In the men's discus throw, sophomore Nick Bultman had a PR in 10th place (153-8).
Meanwhile at Cobb Track — the scene of two record-breaking performances on Friday night — Cal Poly competed in the 800 at the Stanford Invitational.
Four Mustangs ran in the women's race, with Kristen Narum leading the way at 2:13.15. She was followed by Elaina Cromer (2:13.48), Allie Sulaitis (2:14.38) and Jessica Morosoli (2:17.72). Former Cal Poly All-American Maggie Vessey won by a 2.36-second gap, at 2:03.58.
John Guerrero clocked a time of 1:55.25 in the men's race.
Cal Poly will next travel to the Mondo Multi meet and the Mid-Major Challenge, held in Hornet Stadium at Sacramento State from Thursday through Saturday.
