STANFORD, SAN FRANCISCO and LA JOLLA, Calif. — Diana George and Chris Frias both broke school records on Friday, and several other members of the Cal Poly track and field team also surpassed personal bests or advanced to the finals in their events at three separate meets being held around the state.
At the end of the first day of the 30th annual Stanford Invitational, Frias ran the 10,000 meters in 28 minutes, 45.60 seconds, finishing 14th in Section 1 of the race at Cobb Track.
The senior (pictured at right) broke a 31-year-old record, as Carmelo Rios ran to a time of 28:52.04 in 1983. (Rios went on to represent Puerto Rico at the 1984 Olympics.)
Earlier in the day, George finished fourth in Section 2 of the women's 3,000 steeplechase, with a time of 10:15.93.
The old record was 10:17.24 (set in 2011 by Leanne Fogg).
George, also a senior, came into this spring following a cross country season in which she finished sixth at the Big West Conference Championships.
The meet, which features 114 universities, is continually being video-streamed at FloTrack.org for site members. Complete results are posted at THIS LINK.
Additionally, redshirt freshman Holli Arrieta was sixth in Section 5 of the women's 1,500, at 4:30.70, a season best. Rachel Bush, a sophomore, also had a career-best day, finishing eighth in the fifth section of the 5,000, at 16:53.98.
In Section 2 of the men's 3,000 steeple, Nick Woolf was 10th, in 9:00.39.
Elsewhere, at the Cal-Nevada Championships in UC San Diego's Triton Stadium, pole vaulter Clara Davis had the highest finish for the Mustangs, placing third. Her clearance of 12 feet, 5.5 inches was also a PR.
Two teammates, Ferrin Peterson (in sixth place at 11-11.75, another PR) and Amy Loschiavo (seventh, 11-5.75), also scored in the event.
Cal Poly also got a pair of eighth-place finishes, from Shereese Cutler in the women's long jump (at 18-9.25) and Nick Bultman in the men's hammer throw (170-8).
In the sprint prelims, Cal Poly had five men and one woman qualify for Saturday's finals:
- David Williams in the 110 hurdles (third among 30 competitors, at 14.39);
- Ben Hartinger, also in the 110 hurdles (fourth, 14.84);
- Jamison Jordan in the 100 (fourth, at 10.99 with a wind assistance of only 0.2);
