SACRAMENTO — Cal Poly's Devin Bennett finished the decathlon at the Mondo Challenge hosted by Sacramento State on Friday afternoon with 7,069 points, the fifth-best total in school history (among those scored on 1985 tables).
Bennett was second in Hornet Stadium, overtaking Alaska Anchorage junior Cody Thomas.
A day after running the fastest 100-meter dash of his career, the junior also released PRs in the discus (at 131 feet, 3 inches) and javelin (179-11) during the second round of events.
Bennett's latter mark was also No. 1 among the 10 competitors on site, as were his clearance of 13-9.25 in the pole vault and his time of 4 minutes, 24.55 seconds in the 1,500 meters.
Portland State senior Nevin Lewis, bolstered by his first-day wins in the high jump and 400, held on to prevail at 7,268.
Bennett's previous career best was 6,989, compiled at last year's Big West Conference Championships.
Three Mustang teammates followed in fourth through sixth place.
Nick Ahrold had a score of 6,271, as the junior edged freshman Ivy Adair's 6,246. Ted Scranton, a freshman who ended with 6,067, had the best discus throw of anyone (132-11).
In the heptathlon, Cal Poly freshman Jessica Davis finished eighth, with 4,181 points. Her javelin throw of 101 feet moved to the No. 1 spot on the team leaderboard so far this spring.
