Bennett Leads Cal Poly Decathletes on Day 1 at Sacramento State

SACRAMENTO — Cal Poly junior Devin Bennett ended the first day of the decathlon at the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge hosted by Sacramento State in third place, leading three teammates directly behind him in Thursday's standings at Hornet Stadium.
Bennett opened by running the 100-meter dash in a personal-best 11.59 seconds before posting marks of 21 feet, 9.75 inches in the long jump and then 38-0.25 in the shot put. He closed with a clearance of 6-3.5 in the high jump to set himself up with a score of 3,543 heading into Friday's round of events.
A year ago at the Big West Conference Championships, Bennett compiled 6,989 points, the No. 6 total in school history among those based on post-1985 tables.
Ivy Adair is in fourth, at 3,457, ahead of another freshman, Ted Scranton, at 3,412, and junior Nick Ahrold in sixth, at 3,287.
Meanwhile, in the heptathlon, Mustang freshman Jessica Davis is in seventh, with a Day 1 score of 2,634.
Portland State owns the top spot on each leaderboard, as Viking senior Nevin Lewis has a score of 3,851 in the men's competition, while freshman Cecelia Jackson is at 3,111 on the women's side.
