
Mustangs Split Saturday Matches

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Cal Poly volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday at the Northern Colorado/Colorado State Tournament, defeating Baylor in five sets, but falling to Colorado State in three.
With the loss the Mustangs fall to 1-2 on the season and will return to the court at the Sacramento State Tournament where they will face Central Connecticut State, San Jose State and host Sacramento State Sept. 6-7.
In the evening match against Colorado State, the Rams handed the Mustangs a 25-19, 25-22 and 25-16 loss. Cal Poly hit .178 while Colorado State hit .259.
Senior Megan McConnell led the Mustangs with 12 kills on 28 swings. Fellow senior Chelsea Hardin added nine kills with sophomore Hannah Schleis recording seven.
Colorado State was led by Kelsey Snider with 13 kills while Adrianna Culbert had 11 kills.
Junior Shannon Garrett recorded a double-double with 33 assists and a team-high 12 digs. Nicole Kessler added 11 digs. Senior Marianne Gera tallied a team-high four assisted blocks.
In the morning session the team picked up its first win of the season in come from behind fashion to defeat Baylor. The Mustangs won the first set, 25-20, lost the next two, 22-25 and19-25, only to fight back and win the final two sets, 25-23 and 15-13. This was the Mustangs second match at the Northern Colorado/Colorado State Tournament.
The Mustangs were led by Schleis when she recorded a career-high 20 kills. McConnell recorded her second double-double in as many matches when she tallied 15 kills and 12 digs. Hardin added 15 kills of her own.
Sophomore setter Maddie Kuber tallied 26 assists while junior Channon Garrett added 26 of her own. Sophomore Nicole Kessler had 12 digs while senior Kate Walters had 11.
As a team the Mustangs hit .270 while Baylor hit .366. Baylor had three more digs, 55-52, and held a 14.5 to 7 advantage in blocks.
