
Mustangs to Compete at Sacramento State Invitational

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly volleyball team enters its second weekend of tournament play on Friday when they travel to the Sacramento State Invitational. Cal Poly will play Central Connecticut State on Friday at 4 pm. On Saturday the Mustangs will play two matches, facing San Jose State at 10 am and host Sacramento State at 7 pm.
The Mustangs enter the tournament with a 1-2 overall record after the Northern Colorado-Colorado State Tournament with a five set win over Baylor.
In the win over Baylor, sophomore Hannah Schleis led the team with a career-high 20 kills while senior Megan McConnell tallied a double-double with 15 kills and 12 digs. Fellow senior Chelsea Hardin added 15 kills of her own.
In the three-match tournament, McConnell led the team when she averaged 3.67 kills per set with Schleis adding 3.00. Freshman Taylor Gruenewald contributed with 1.83 kills in her first action as a Mustang.
Sophomore Nicole Kessler led the team over the weekend in digs when she averaged 2.92 with McConnell adding 2.42.
Sophomore Maddie Kuber and junior Shannon Garrett handled the setting duties at the tournament and dished out 8.29 and 9.83 assists respectively.
San Jose State enters the week with a 0-3 overall record after competition at the Tribe Inivtational in Williamsburg, VA. Laurn Jacobsen leads the team with 3.50 kills per set with Hanah Blume adding 2.75. Sarah Griest contributes 2.45 kills and 1.00 blocks per set. SJSU holds a 17-15 advantage over the Mustangs in the all-time series.
Central Connecticut State enters the tournament 1-2 with a 3-0 win over Brrighamton. Their losses have come against St. John's (1-3) and Colgate (0-3). The team is led by Heather Trueman averaging 2.67 kills per set. Brooke Schwab adds 2.10. This will be the first meeting between the two teams.
Sacramento State enters the week with 4-0 record after winning the La Salle Invitational this past weekend. The Hornets are led by Sloan Lovett with 4.07 kills per set. Her all-around game includes 2.43 digs while hitting .318. Kayla Beal adds 3.47 kills with Morgan Stanley chipping in with 3.15 kills. Cal Poly holds a 7-6 advantage over Sacramento State in the all-time series.
