UC Irvine Defeats Shorthanded Mustangs, 4-3

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly men's tennis team, hampered by injuries, lost a Big West Conference match to UC Irvine, 4-3, on the Mustang Courts Friday afternoon. Cal Poly was without the services of senior Jordan Bridge and junior Jurgen De Jager.
With the loss Cal Poly falls to 8-8 overall and 0-1 in conference matches while UCI improves to 4-15 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
The match opened with doubles play with Naveen Beasley and Matt Thomson defeating Jonathan Poon and Tyler Pham, 8-6, on the second court.
Andre Dome and Marco Comuzzo secured the doubles point for the Mustangs with an 8-4 win over ryan Chung and Jonathan Hammel on the first court.
With the point decided, UCI duo of Jacob Jung and Justin Agbayani defeated Gannon Daynes and Derek Klein, 8-3.
Singles play opened with Comuzzo putting the Mustangs up 2-0 with a dominating, 6-1, 6-3, win over Reo Asami on the second court. UCI picked up the next two singles wins with Jung and Pham winning on courts four and three respectively. Jung defeated Beasley, 6-4 and 6-2, while Pham defeated Klein, 6-1 and 6-2.
Dome, ranked 22nd in the nation, won in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-1, over Chung to put the Mustangs back on top, 3-2. But UCI's Justin Agbayani picked up a 6-3, 7-5, win over Daynes on the sixth court and Shibahara won on the fifth court, 6-7, 6-2 and 6-2, over Thomson.
The Mustangs return to the courts on Sunday when the Mustangs host UC Riverside in Big West Conference match at the San Luis Obispo Country Club at 11 am.
