
Cal Poly Breezes Past Cal State Dominguez Hills, 85-49

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Sophomore wing Dave Nwaba scored a career-high 22 points and also grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds to lead Cal Poly to an 85-49 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills in a non-conference men's basketball game Saturday night in the Mott Athletics Center.
Senior guard Kyle Odister and freshman guard Taylor Sutlive each added 14 points for Cal Poly (4-5) and senior forward Chris Eversley contributed 10 points and six rebounds.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (4-5) was paced by senior guard Pierson Williams with 16 points.
In producing his team-leading seventh double-digit game of the season, Nwaba (pictured at right) made 11 of 13 floor shots and also recorded five steals. Freshman guard Ridge Shipley dished out a career-high seven assists while Sutlive, a perfect five-for-five from the floor (four from three-point range) produced a career high with his 14 points.
Cal State Dominguez Hills scored the first points of the game on a three-pointer by Williams, but two baskets by Nwaba and single hoops from Eversley and Odister gave Cal Poly an 8-3 lead and the Mustangs never looked back.
Cal Poly led by as many as 21 points in the first half, settling for a 42-22 advantage at the break, and pulled away by as many as 36 points on four occasions in the second half, including the final margin of victory.
Cal Poly's 42 first-half points are a season high as well as its 85 points for the game.
Cal Poly made 49 percent of its floor shots (34 of 69), including 12 of 24 from three-point range, while holding the visiting Toros to 39 percent accuracy from the field (18 of 46). Cal State Dominguez Hills made eight of 20 treys.
Cal Poly outrebounded Cal State Dominguez Hills 43-22, with 10 players grabbing boards for the Mustangs. Each team made just five free throws and combined for only 24 personal fouls.
Cal Poly plays its next four games on the road, beginning Tuesday at Loyola Marymount. The Mustangs also visit Pittsburgh next Saturday, Stanford on Dec. 29 and Delaware on Jan. 4.
