SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Senior quarterback Henry Furman passed for 199 yards and two touchdowns while junior tailback Tyler Varga rushed for 114 yards as Yale rallied from a 10-7 halftime deficit to upset No. 18 Cal Poly 24-10 in the first-ever matchup of Big Sky vs. Ivy League football teams Saturday afternoon in Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Senior placekicker Bobby Zalud kicked a 53-yard field goal as the first half ended, giving Cal Poly its 10-7 lead at the break. Yale, however, held the Mustangs to just 37 yards on 18 plays in total offense, one first down and zero points in the second half, the first time Cal Poly has been held scoreless in the second half since the final game of the 2010 season, a 22-21 loss to UC Davis.
Cal Poly, which had a six-game home winning streak snapped, fell to 2-3 on the year while Yale remained unbeaten at 3-0.
Yale, held to five first downs and 116 yards in the first half, finished with 357 yards on 77 plays while Cal Poly collected 329 yards on 71 plays.
Cal Poly sophomore quarterback Chris Brown had career highs of 19 completions in 26 attempts for 104 yards but was intercepted twice. He also was sacked twice.
Cal Poly, which had turned the ball over just two times in its first four games this season, committed four turnovers Saturday – losing a pair of fumbles.
Yale took a 7-0 lead on a three-yard run by Derek Russell with 3:52 remaining in the first quarter, driving just 40 yards after Spencer Rymiszewski blocked a Cal Poly punt.
The Mustangs answered with a 67-yard drive climaxed by fullback Brandon Howe's 33-yard run, tying the game with 44 seconds left in the first quarter. Zalud's 53-yard field goal, his longest as a Mustang and second-longest of his collegiate career – he kicked a 57-yarder while playing for Arkansas State – snapped the 7-7 tie as the first half ended.
The second half was all Yale offensively.
Parker Toms kicked a 31-yard field goal, Keith Coty capped a 75-yard drive with an eight-yard catch from Furman and Chris Smith's 28-yard reception with 3:24 left in the game ended a 98-yard Yale drive and clinched the decision for the Bulldogs, who made their third trip ever to California.
A third-quarter Cal Poly touchdown on a 67-yard pass from Brown to freshman Cam Akins was wiped out by an illegal formation penalty.
Mustang junior slotback Kristaan Ivory rushed for 63 yards on 11 carries and caught eight passes for 34 yards. Junior wide receiver Willie Tucker made three receptions before suffering an injury in the second quarter. He did not return.
Senior linebacker Johnny Millard (pictured above) and junior linebacker Cameron Ontko each recorded 13 tackles for Cal Poly. Junior linebacker Nick Dzubnar added 12 stops. Sophomore cornerback Karlton Dennis nabbed Cal Poly's second interception of the season.
Sophomore strong safety Cole Champion earned 14 tackles, recovered a fumble and intercepted two passes for Yale.
Junior wide receiver Deon Randall had seven catches for 79 yards for Yale.
Cal Poly had the ball for 19 minutes in the first half and just eight minutes after intermission.
