Graves Sparks Cal Poly to 47-0 Big Sky Victory over Weber State

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Sophomore quarterback Dano Graves, in his first collegiate start, passed for three touchdowns and ran for 116 yards to lead Cal Poly to a 47-0 victory over Weber State in a Big Sky Conference football game Saturday night in Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
With the Mustang defense holding the visiting Wildcats to just 173 total yards in posting its first shutout in seven years, Cal Poly improved to 2-0 in Big Sky games and evened its overall mark at 3-3. Weber State suffered its sixth straight loss, falling to 1-6 and 0-3.
Graves (pictured at right), who averaged 6.8 yards per carry, rushed 17 times and completed 13 of 16 passes for 169 yards. His scoring passes were to Kristaan Ivory for six yards, Cole Stanford for 14 yards and Akaninyene Umoh for 38 yards.
Ivory earned his third 100-yard game of the season and fourth of his career, rushing for exactly 100 yards on 18 trips. He scored twice on the ground covering three and five yards in addition to his touchdown reception.
Brandon Howe ran one yard for a third-quarter touchdown and fullback Matt Rulon capped Cal Poly's scoring with a two-yard run with five minutes to play.
Weber State drove into Cal Poly territory just twice in the game, marching to the 36-yard line before a first-quarter punt and to the Mustang 21 as time expired.
Cal Poly compiled advantages of 29-10 in first downs, 580-173 in total yards and 31:23 to 28:37 in time of possession. The 173 yards are the fewest given up by the Mustangs in the Tim Walsh Era (five seasons) and the lowest total since North Carolina Central netted 123 yards in 2008.
Weber State converted just four of 16 third-down plays and punted 10 times. There were no turnovers in the game and each team was penalized just four times.
Wildcat quarterback Austin Chipoletti completed 16 of 23 passes for 115 yards. Erik Walker was his favorite target with eight catches for 55 yards and Tony Schmitz gained 18 yards on four carries as Weber State's top rusher.
After scoring no sacks in its last four games, Cal Poly notched a pair against Weber State. Sullivan Grosz earned one solo sack and combined with Andrew Alcaraz on the other. Grosz also recorded a pair of quarterback hurries and four total tackles.
Linebacker Nick Dzubnar led all Cal Poly tacklers with nine and Cameron Ontko added seven. Roman Valenzuela, Adam Padilla and Chris Jones each recorded 13 tackles for Weber State.
Cal Poly produced a pair of 100-yard rushers in a game for the second time this season -– Ivory and Chris Brown cracked the 100-yard mark against Portland State -– and for the fifth time in the last three seasons.
Stanford's five catches are a career high.
Last Mustang shutout was a 55-0 decision against Savannah State in the 2006 season finale, also in Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Cal Poly football, presented by French Hospital Medical Center, plays another Big Sky Conference game next Saturday at Montana. The game will be televised by Max Media and available on KKFX in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties.
The Grizzlies improved to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in Big Sky games with a 42-7 victory at UC Davis.
