Cal Poly Opens 2013 Season with 5-2 Win over Saint Mary's

FRESNO, Calif. – The Cal Poly men's tennis team opened the 2013 season with a convincing 5-2 win over the Gaels from Saint Mary's College on Saturday in Fresno. The match was played at the Spalding G Wathan Tennis Center on the Fresno State campus.
The Mustangs, ranked 62nd,will return to the courts on Sunday when they play host Fresno State at 10:30 am. Fresno State enters the week ranked 50th in the nation.
The Big West Conference defending champions did not disappoint as the Mustangs swept the doubles point, 2-0. Seniors Andre Dome and Jordan Bridge made quick work of Jessi Kiuro and Joachim Nordstrom, 8-3, on the first court while Marco Comuzzo and Jurgen De Jager defeated Sief El Sherbini and Thomas Hunt, 8-3, on the third court.
The match on the second court went unfinished with the doubles point set. Matt Thomson and Jordan Kepler were leading Thomas Manner and James Markiewicz, 6-4, when the match was called.
Dome, ranked 89th in the country, made fast work of Kiuro on the first court with a straight-set, 6-2, 6-4, win to put the Mustangs up 2-0.
True freshman Derek Klein was impressive in his dual match debut on the fourth court with a 6-3, 6-3 win over El Sherbini giving the Mustangs a 3-0 lead.
Comuzzo sealed the win for the Mustangs with a 7-5, 6-3 win on the second court over Manner while Bridge picked up the win on the third court with a 6-2, 3-6 and 6-2 win over Nordstrom.
