
Pair of Freshmen Lead Cal Poly to 16th Place in Bill Cullum Invitational

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. -- Freshman Brandon Shaw shot a one-under-par 71 and Camden Price, another freshman, added a 72 as the Cal Poly men's golf team finished 16th in the 20-team Bill Cullum Invitational, which concluded a two-day run Tuesday at the Wood Ranch Golf Club.
Shaw compiled a 54-hole 237 total, climbing from 106th place into tie for 85th place, while Price (pictured at right) closed with a 221, rising from 35th place into a tie for 23rd place.
Senior Grant Martens slipped to a final-round 78 for a 224 total and a tie for 37th place while Cole Nygren, another Mustang freshman, carded an 80 for a 239 total and a tie for 93rd place.
Rounding out the Cal Poly scoring was Scott Patterson with an 82 for a 242 total and 100th place.
Top individual honors went to Jon Rahm Rodriguez of Arizona State with a final-round 67 and a 12-under-par 204 total on the 6,819-yard, par-72 course. Rodriguez finished three strokes ahead of runner-up Grant Forrest of San Diego. Travis Russell of UC Irvine was another two strokes back in third place.
San Diego captured first place in the team standings with a 14-under-par 850 total, followed by Arizona State at 859 and Washington State at 866.
Cal Poly posted rounds of 305, 309 and 301 for a 915 total.
Cal Poly has concluded its fall schedule and returns to action Feb. 11-12 at the Pat Hicks Invitational hosted by Southern Utah at the Sunbrook Golf Course in St. George, Utah.
