MALIBU, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's tennis program's No. 1 doubles tandem of junior Amy Markhoff and sophomore Alexa Lee upended Pepperdine's Anamika Bhargava and Marie Zalameda – ranked 34th nationally entering play on Friday afternoon – but the Mustangs saw a nine-match winning streak snapped versus No. 28 Pepperdine at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center, 5-2.
Despite the 8-7 upset victory by Lee and Markhoff, Cal Poly (14-4) dropped the doubles point for the first time in five matches. At No. 2, Cal Poly senior Ashley Pane and junior Jocelyn Davis suffered an 8-5 defeat versus Khunpak Issara and Ale Granillo. The Mustang freshman partnership of Florence Lehane and Gabrielle Gatewood also fell at No. 3 versus Arianna Colffer and Megan Moore, 8-4.
In singles action, Lee fell at No. 1 versus Colffer (6-4, 4-6, 7-5) before Lehane suffered a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 defeat against Bhargava. Pane was swept at No. 3 versus Granillo, 6-3, 6-3, but freshman Jennifer Cornea secured a victory for the Mustangs at No. 4 by downing Issara, 4-6, 7-6 (12-10), 6-4. Davis rebounded at No. 5 to deal Zalameda a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5) defeat, but Mustang freshman Kathryn Webb saw a nine-match winning streak snapped at No. 6 with a 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3) loss versus Moore.
"We played a very hard-fought and close match," 11th-year Cal Poly head coach Hugh Bream said. "Pepperdine has a long and strong tradition. I thought we competed great and the matches we played were really close, but they were just too good today."
Cal Poly, still atop the Big West Conference standings with a 6-0 mark, completes a four-match road trip versus Long Beach State (13-5, 4-1) on Saturday, April 9 at 11 a.m.
