LONG BEACH, Calif. – Freshman Kathryn Webb won for the 10th time during her previous 11 appearances, but the 42nd-ranked Cal Poly women's tennis program suffered its first Big West Conference defeat of the spring campaign, falling versus No. 47 Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon, 6-1.
Cal Poly (14-5, 6-1), which could have solidified the top seed for the April 28-May 1 Big West Tournament with a victory, was swept in doubles action for the first time since a Feb. 14 loss at then-No. 7 UCLA. At No. 1, Long Beach State's Anais Dallara and Klaudia Malenovska downed Mustang junior Amy Markhoff and sophomore Alexa Lee, 8-1. Long Beach State's Jaklin Alawi and Rachel Manasse then defeated senior Ashley Pane and junior Jocelyn Davis, 8-4, before Sarah Cantlay and Julie Luzar dealt Cal Poly's freshman tandem of Gabrielle Gatewood and Florence Lehane an 8-5 defeat.
Directed by Dallara's 6-1, 6-4 sweep of Lee at No. 1, Long Beach State (15-5, 5-1) won the opening five singles matches. Malenovska downed Pane at No. 2, 6-0, 6-3, before Long Beach State's Deborah Armstrong topped Lehane, 6-3, 6-2. At No. 4, Mustang freshman Jennifer Cornea trailed Manasse, 3-6, 6-1, 3-0, before withdrawing. Cantlay returned at No. 5 to sweep Davis, 6-4, 6-3, before Webb (above) secured Cal Poly's victory at No. 6 by topping Anna Jeczmionka, 6-2, 6-3.
"Long Beach State played a great match on its home court," said 11th-year Cal Poly head coach Hugh Bream, whose Mustangs saw a nine-match winning streak snapped at No. 28 Pepperdine on Friday. "I think we came out a little heavy-legged after a long battle at Pepperdine and we couldn't afford to do that against a team with the quality of Long Beach State."
Cal Poly, which completed a four-game road trip on Saturday, closes out its 2011 home schedule by hosting No. 60 UC Irvine on Saturday, April 16. Match time on Mustang Courts is scheduled for 11 a.m.
