DAVIS, Calif. – The 42nd-ranked Cal Poly women's tennis program improved to six-for-six in sweeping aside Big West opposition this season as the Mustangs retained first place atop the conference standings with a 6-1 triumph versus No. 66 UC Davis on Saturday afternoon at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
Cal Poly (14-3, 6-0), winners of nine-successive matches and five matches this year against ranked foes, opened Saturday's triumph by capturing the doubles point for the fifth-consecutive outing. Mustang junior Amy Markhoff and sophomore Alexa Lee dropped a 9-8 (2) decision at No. 1 versus Megan Heneghan and Kelly Chui. However, senior Ashley Pane and junior Jocelyn Davis stormed back to stomp Nicole Koehly and Sidney Brady at No. 2, 8-2, before the Cal Poly freshman tandem of Florence Lehane and Gabrielle Gatewood wrapped up the doubles point at No. 3 by edging Lauren Curry and Dahra Zamudio, 9-8 (2).
Lee returned in singles action to down Heneghan at No. 1, 6-2, 0-6, 6-2, before Pane rallied to down Zamudio at No. 2, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. The Mustangs suffered their lone loss at No. 3 with Lehane falling versus Chui, 6-3, 6-1. However, freshman Jennifer Cornea (above) posted a 6-2, 6-0 sweep of Koehly at No. 4 before Davis whitewashed Curry at No. 5, 6-1, 6-2. Freshman Kathryn Webb then rounded off Cal Poly's effort with a 6-0, 6-2 defeat of Melissa Kobayakawa at No. 6.
"It was a tough matchup for us today, but I thought we played really well throughout. The Big West Conference has a lot of depth and quality," 11th-year Cal Poly head coach Hugh Bream said. "The bottom of our lineup is so tough though. Jennifer, Jocelyn and Kathryn just pounded on people and were relentless for us today."
Cal Poly continues its current four-game road trip at No. 44 Long Beach State on Saturday, April 9 at 11 a.m.
