
No. 42 Mustangs Strengthen Big West Lead with 4-3 Victory

STOCKTON, Calif. – Singles victories by senior Ashley Pane and freshmen Florence Lehane and Kathryn Webb allowed the No. 42 Cal Poly women's tennis program to stay atop the Big West Conference standings as the Mustangs edged Pacific on Friday afternoon, 4-3.
Cal Poly (13-3, 5-0), enjoying its highest position this season in the ITA National Rankings, opened Friday's triumph by earning the doubles point for the 30th time during the previous 39 outings. Mustang junior Amy Markhoff and sophomore Alexa Lee opened Cal Poly's effort at No. 1 with an 8-2 loss versus Jenifer Widjajaand Julia Hansen. However, junior Jocelyn Davis and Pane produced an 8-2 victory to prevail at No. 2 against Shabby Eslamiand Summer Irvin before the freshmen tandem of Gabrielle Gatewood and Lehane (above) clinched the doubles point at No. 3 for Cal Poly with an 8-5 topping of Olga Gumenyuk and Susan Te.
Lee returned in singles action at No. 1 to drop a 6-1, 6-3 decision versus Widjaja before Lehane rallied at No. 2 to down Hansen, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. Pane furthered Cal Poly's efforts at No. 3 with a 6-0, 6-1 sweep of Gumenyuk. Davis fell at No. 4 versus Eslami (6-4, 6-4) and Markhoff failed to sustain her advantage at No. 5 against Te (5-7, 6-4, 6-2). Webb, however, solidified Cal Poly's triumph with a 6-2, 6-3 whitewash of Kateryna Nezhura.
