SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The No. 46 Cal Poly women's tennis team dropped just two sets on Saturday afternoon as the program stayed atop the Big West Conference standings with a 6-1 defeat of Cal State Fullerton on Mustang Courts.

At No. 1, sophomore Margarita Spicin teamed with freshman Florence Lehane to down Tiffany Mai and Monica Rodriguez, 8-3. Mustang senior Ashley Pane and junior Jocelyn Davis dealt Cal State Fullerton's Megan Sandford and Morgan McIntosh an 8-2 defeat at No. 2 before the freshman partnership of Gabrielle Gatewood and Jennifer Cornea finalized Cal Poly's sweep with an 8-3 win at No. 3.
Mai returned in singles play to produce Cal State Fullerton's lone victory with a 7-5, 7-6 win at No. 1 versus Lehane. Spicin, however, stormed back at No. 2 to down McIntosh, 6-0, 6-2, before Pane (above) topped Akhmedova at No. 3, 6-2, 6-1. At No. 4, Davis bettered Rodriguez, 6-2, 6-1, before Mustang freshman Kathryn Webb smashed Sandford at No. 5, 6-0, 6-0. Cal Poly junior Amy Markhoff finalized Saturday's victory by the same score at No. 6 versus Nichols.
"We had the opportunity to put people in different positions today and everyone competed and focused well, considering finals start on Monday," 11th-year Cal Poly head coach Hugh Bream said. "We feel good at the midpoint of the season. Half of our remaining opponents should be ranked, but our players love to compete so we expect to continue our progress."
Following a seven-day hiatus, Cal Poly will continue its four-match homestand when hosting Texas-Arlington on Saturday, March 19 at 11 a.m.
