SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The No. 57 Cal Poly women's tennis team secured its first victory against a ranked opponent this season and furthered its winning streak to sixth-successive triumphs as the Mustangs downed No. 66 Texas-Arlington, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon in a match hosted by UC Santa Barbara.
During a match relocated due to expected inclement weather in San Luis Obispo County, the Mustangs (11-3, 4-0) halted Texas-San Antonio's six-contest winning streak by earning the doubles point for the 28th time in the previous 37 outings. Junior Amy Markhoff and sophomore Alexa Lee opened Cal Poly's doubles effort at No. 1 by doubling up Texas-San Antonio's Daiana Negreanu and Linda Aqvist, 8-4. Senior Ashley Pane and junior Jocelyn Davis then clinched the doubles point by the same winning margin versus Giada D'ortona and Natalia Mayuk. The Mavericks scored a minor consolation at No. 3 as Maria Martinez-Romero and Katarina Mlcochova combined to better the Mustang freshman partnership of Florence Lehane and Gabrielle Gatewood, 9-7.
Lee (above) returned in singles action at No. 1 to deal Negreanu a second defeat, 7-6, 6-0. At No. 3, Martinez-Romero slid past Lehane, 3-6, 6-0, 6-4. However, Pane resumed play at No. 4 by downing Mayuk, 6-2, 6-2, before Mustang freshman Jennifer Cornea rallied at No. 5 to defeat Mlcochova, 6-7, 7-6, 7-5. Cal Poly freshman Kathryn Webb then finalized the Mustang victory with a 7-5, 6-4 sweep of D'ortona at No. 6.
At No. 2 singles, Mustang sophomore Margarita Spicin's match versus Aqvist was suspended due to rain. The match abandoned drawn 3-6, 6-0, 6-4.
"We played close, hard-fought matches all the way through and I thought today's win was our best performance of the season," said 11th-year Cal Poly head coach Hugh Bream, whose team hosts Dartmouth on Mustang Courts on Tuesday, March 22 at 10:30 a.m. "We played great tennis and just squeezed the match out in front of the rain. We're excited to have two days to prepare for Dartmouth and hope for sunny skies."
