
Cal Poly Moves Into Second Place in Big West With 65-56 Victory

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Senior guard Shawn Lewis scored 23 points as Cal Poly defeated UC Davis 65-56 in a Big West Conference men's basketball game Thursday night before 2,262 in Mott Gym.
Junior center Will Donahue added 13 points and nine rebounds while freshman guard Maliik Love scored 11 points and junior forward David Hanson 10 as Cal Poly improved to 10-11 overall and 5-4 in Big West games, tied for second place with Cal State Northridge.
UC Davis, which fell to 8-13 and 3-6, was led by senior guard Joe Harden with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Mark Payne added 14 points and eight boards.
Cal Poly led for almost the entire game, save for a pair of one-point UC Davis leads at 21-20 late in the first half and 33-32 and 34-33 in the first five minutes of the second half.
The Mustangs went on a 13-4 run after the final Aggie lead, opening up a 46-38 with 10:21 to play. Junior forward Jordan Lewis capped the run with a three-pointer off an assist from sophomore guard Chris O'Brien.
Cal Poly led by as many as 14 points on four occasions in the final four minutes of the game before the Aggies scored the final five points of the game.
Cal Poly made 46.8 percent of its floor shots, though the Mustangs missed their first five three-pointers and finished two-for-11 from long range. UC Davis was held to 35.6 percent from the floor, the third-lowest total allowed by Cal Poly this season. The Aggies were two of 14 from three-point range.
Cal Poly made just 19 of its 40 free throws for 47.5 percent -- its lowest figure of the year – compared to 22 of 27 for UC Davis. The game was slowed by 48 personal fouls, 26 committed by the Aggies. No players fouled out, but six finished the game with four fouls.
The Aggies, who played each of their 11 suited players, outrebounded Cal Poly 36-33 but turned the ball over 19 times, 11 more than the Mustangs.
Lewis, who has scored at least 20 points in each of his last four games, missed his first double-double of the season by two rebounds.
Cal Poly returns to action Saturday night, hosting Pacific for a 7 p.m. Big West Conference game in Mott Gym.
